Plan your trip Where to Stay in Sosua: Areas, Beaches and Villas

For families and groups, the best place to stay in Sosua is a private pool villa inside a gated community such as Sosua Ocean Village: quiet, secure around the clock and minutes from the beach. If you want to walk to bars and restaurants, downtown Sosua and Playa Alicia are more convenient but busier.

Playa Alicia in Sosua

Sosua at a glance

Sosua is a laid-back beach town on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, about 15 minutes from Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) and roughly 15 minutes from Cabarete, the island’s kitesurfing hub. Its sheltered bay is one of the best places on the coast for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

Unlike Punta Cana, Sosua is not built around giant all-inclusive resorts. Most visitors rent condos or villas, eat out in town and explore the coast on their own.

Downtown and Playa Alicia

Downtown Sosua, known as El Batey, is where you will find most restaurants, bars, grocery stores and banks. Staying here means you can do everything on foot, but expect music and traffic, especially on weekends.

Playa Alicia, a short walk from downtown, is a smaller and calmer beach than the main Playa Sosua, popular for sunsets. Accommodation nearby is mostly condos and boutique hotels.

Sosua Ocean Village

Sosua Ocean Village is a large gated community with 24-hour security, located between Sosua and Cabarete. Inside, you will find private pool villas, restaurants, shared pools, a kids’ water park, a gym and sports courts, plus padel and pickleball at Point Racket Club by the entrance.

The beach is about 5 minutes away by golf cart and downtown Sosua a few minutes by car. For families and groups, it is the sweet spot: the privacy of a house without being far from the action.

  • Security: controlled access and guards around the clock.
  • Space: 3- to 5-bedroom villas with private pools.
  • House rules: quiet after 9 p.m., all guests registered, no drones.

Villa or resort?

Once you are a group of six or more, a villa usually costs less per person than hotel rooms, and you get far more space: a bedroom per couple, a full kitchen and a pool to yourselves. It is also easier with kids, who can nap while the adults enjoy the terrace.

A resort still makes sense for a short couples’ trip when you do not want to cook or plan anything.
